The St. John’s Alumni Association met on Sunday, April 22, 2012. The program opened with a Mass at 10:30AM. Fr. Paul Landolfi, S.M., Alumni Association Moderator, was the celebrant. Following his homily, Father Paul and Ms. Rita Tortorelli, newly named St. John’s Alumni Liaison, presided at the induction of the new Alumni Association Officers; President: Steve Suida, Vice President: Joseph Cunningham, Treasurer: John McGee, and Secretary: Geri Suida.
In his comments, Father Paul mentioned that since the Marianist Community will no longer be in residence or involved in the ministry at St. John’s as of the end of June 2012, the responsibility for the Alumni Association’s future will be in the hands of the new officers working with Ms. Rita Tortorelli.
Father Paul also mentioned that Brother Tom Trager, S.M. has been working with Mr. Shondell Griffin, St. John’s Recreation Coordinator, in an effort to increase participation on the part of former residents who would be considerably younger than the Alumni Association’s present membership. They are developing a mailing list of potential members and plan to contact them, inviting them to a get together, perhaps a ball game and some “eats”. Hopefully, the young men who show an interest in such activities will help expand the list of the Alumni’s official membership. (The reader is invited to offer any suggestions or names and addresses relative to this effort).
Following the Mass, everyone enjoyed the pot-luck buffet as well as story swapping and picture taking. The enthusiasm, warmth and joy was obvious and left no doubt in the minds of all that St. John’s has meant much to many.
The Marianists will sorely miss their ministry at Rockaway Park, but they are encouraged by the fact that St. John’s will continue to bring the Good News to many young men and their families. The St. John’s Marianist Community were all present: Father Paul Landolfi, Brother Raymond Miklich, Brother Tom Trager, Brother Steve O’Neil, and Brother Raymond Kane, as well as visiting Marianist, Brother Michael Corcoran.
