ST. JOHN’S CUTS RIBBON FOR NEW CLOSE TO HOME PROGRAM
Friday, May 30th, 2014
On Friday, May 30th, about 50 of St. John’s staff and friends attended a ribbon cutting ceremony at 34-20 214th Place in Bayside, Queens, New York. Responsive to the request of the NYC Administration for Children’s Services, St. John’s will open a Close to Home 12 bed facility. St. John’s has had a Close to Home program in Rockaway Park since August, 2012 and its excellent record prompted ACS to ask Ms. Alissa Deakin, St. John’s Executive Director, to consider assuming the responsibility of starting another program in Bayside.
The ribbon cutting took place in the afternoon. The morning consisted of Orientation Training for all those who will be involved in the day-to-day operations of the home.
After giving a brief history of what went into St. John’s assuming the undertaking, Ms. Deakin asked Brother Tom Trager, S.M., her predecessor as Executive Director, to offer some reflections. He highlighted the important role we can play in supporting the young men who will be placed in our care.
Ms. Deakin asked Brother Tom and Mr. Stefan Phillip, who will direct the facility in Bayside, to cut the ribbon. Sandwiches and dessert followed. It was clear that the enthusiasm was high and all were eager to get busy doing good things.
