St. John’s Day 2013
Hurricane Sandy tried to take away our annual St. John’s Day festival but we were not about to let that happen because, as our tee shirts this year stated, we are “Stronger Than Sandy”. There were some adjustments such as the tent being staked into the asphalt play yard instead of the lawn which was still full of debris from the storm. Also, with the loss of our administration building, we also lost our commercial kitchen. However, the staff stepped up and volunteered to do the cooking in each of our apartments and even the NSD facility in Richmond Hill brought some food with them when they arrived. Some said the food was better than ever.
The Boardwalk Run had to be eliminated from the program as there is no longer a boardwalk to run on, but there were other activities for everyone present including the usual clown who painted faces and did some balloon sculpting, as well as a pirate swing ride for kids all ages and the crafts tables, where one could design a sand bottle or bead bracelet.
Some of the Mormons who were so helpful with the clean up after the hurricane were in attendance and enjoyed a game of basketball with the residents, as were some alumni, and we were happy to see Father Paul and Brother Tom return for the festivities. It wouldn’t be the same without them.
It was a beautiful get-together of the St. John’s family. Thanks go out to everyone who helped to make it a tremendous success.
